The Traveller’s Rest-Event Junkie…

The Specials, The Madness When I survey my life as a Christian one thing that I observe from my experience is how easy it is to become a special events and conference junkie. Both as a punter and as a ‘pastor’ the big event was something to encourage the spirit and the being to keep [...]

The Traveller’s Rest- Master or Servant ?

Intro Have been pondering alot about leadership this week. How the whole being a leader thing was sold to me, how I was programmed to be a leader and how I was mentored by others who were leaders. Then I thought about Jesus… nuff said. I have written this prose/poem in response to these ponderings. [...]

The Traveller’s Rest- Keep an Eye on the Islands

Post Wedding Focus Since the royal wedding of William and Kate I have found the focus shifted in a very interesting direction. I have found this focus very prophetic and think something significant is happening with this shift of gaze. Whereas other royal weddings have led to honeymoons in exotic locations this wedding has led [...]

Interesting Scripture #11

Understanding some Scriptures are very personal and this is one such text. In 2004, Sue had been diagnosed with cancer and I remember the time when a group of people were about to pray for her. Before the prayed she said: I do not want you praying for me to stop me dying, for we [...]

I believe: in life now

Life has many twists and turns. There are huge questions – why does someone have an easy life, why someone has endless struggles. So hopefully what I write here is not read as if I am dismissing the paradoxes of life. Faith is more than a belief in an after-life. Life can be enjoyed. The [...]

I believe: in life to come

This is not all there is to it I believe in life after death. Not though with everyone with their own harp and cloud. Much more down to earth. I am 90% certain that there is concious life post death, and in some form of bodiless state… but that this is also a waiting stage [...]

The Traveller’s Rest- My Dad on earth…

Priority list As a church Pastor I always faced the task of prioritising. There were demands and expectations all of the time. At college we were taught that there was a list of priority in ministry life; God, family, others, myself. I soon found out that for church people and eldership teams this list was [...]

I believe: he was born of a virgin

Maybe I should have touched on this aspect a little earlier. But the Scriptures make so little of this issue theologically. I personally believe that the conception of Jesus was not the result of sexual intercourse – that he was conceived by a virgin. I am not sure why this is the case… in other [...]

I believe: his death opens a way

Understanding the death of Jesus is not straightforward. Theories of the atonement abound. People get in trouble when they talk of some theories as being similar to ‘cosmic child abuse’. What is clear is that we cannot have a divide between God the Father and the Son, in the sense of one demanding punishment being [...]

I believe: Jesus is the prototype

In the beginning God created Adam and Eve. Humanity – or maybe just potential humanity? Why do I suggest this? We know that Jesus is fully human – thank God for this. But what is more than that he is truly human. So he is fully God – we are not nor will be, yet [...]

I believe: Jesus is my God

Most doctrine books will start with a Doctrine of God section. I think though that Jesus changed the order for the doctrine books. We do not know God without having him revealed by the Son. ‘Was / is Jesus God?’ might be a legitimate question but it really needs to be rephrased. Jesus is God, [...]

The Traveller’s Rest- Should We Pass Over the Passover?

Historical thread What have Patrick of Ireland, David of Wales, Columba, Count Zinzandorf and the Moravians, the Puritans and the Waldenses got in common? Yes they were all radical reformers and holy wanderers in the earth, but there is something I also find very interesting and something that I wanted to open up for thought/discussion/whatever [...]

The 'Gates' of society

Gates

Much of the material that will be central to these posts will cover perspectives on the 'gates' of society, the places of influence that shape the culture. If transformation is a desired outcome, such aspects as strategic prayer and understanding the redemptive gifts of places will play their part. As prayer opens up space, filling it will be vital, not in a controlling, top-down sense, but with a servant spirit. Finding appropriate terminology is difficult. Maybe 'transformation' is not the right term, perhaps 'transfiguration', where inner qualities burst through.

I have chosen to use the term 'gates' and although they can be defined any number of ways these are the seven ways I have chosen to group them by:

  • Arts & entertainment
  • Business, commerce & trade
  • Education & training
  • Family & community
  • Health, science & technology
  • Media & communication
  • Politics, government, law & order
